12.03.20

The coronavirus is sweeping the world and the matter is serious and it should be treated so, by all of us. So, dear ladies, we urge you to be careful and take extra precaution measures, because even if it may seem that COVID-19 is something far from your country, or that it will not happen to you or your close ones, the truth is that we are talking about a virus that spreads very easily and extremely fast, and no one is 100% protected.

So, here are some answers given to us by the World Health Organization, so you can fully grasp what’s the whole deal with the coronavirus and what are the measures you can take in order to stay safe and protected from it.

1.      What is the coronavirus?

The coronavirus, also knows as COVID-19, is an infectious disease, that’s easily spreadable among humans.

2.      What are the most common symptoms of COVID-19?

The virus manifests itself with symptoms like fever, tiredness and dry cough. There are also other symptoms that may or may not occur: aches, pains, nasal congestion, a runny nose, a sore throat and diarrhea. Some people may not experience any of those symptoms and still be infected, carrying on infecting others.

80% of the people infected with COVID-19 recover without any special treatment.
1 out of 6 people infected may get seriously ill and develop difficulty breathing.
The ones with a chronic illness like diabetes, high blood pressure or heart problems, are at a higher risk of getting infected, so pay extra attention to your parents and grand-parents, help them with groceries and anything else that keeps them away from crowded places.

 3.      How does the coronavirus spreads?

COVID-19 spreads from a person that has the virus to a healthy person through small droplets from the nose or mouth, spread when the infected person coughs or exhales. These droplets can land on objects or surfaces around, and other people can catch the virus by simply touching those infected surfaces and then touching their eyes, mouth or nose. A healthy person can also catch COVID-19 by being too close when another person coughs or exhales, causing the droplets to be breathe by the healthy person.

That’s why you should stay 1 meter away from a sick person or a person that sneezes or coughs!

4.      What are the protection measures you can take to prevent the spread of the disease?

  • Wash your hands with water and soap regularly, especially after being public transportation, a cab, subway, after using the bathroom and before eating.

  • Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or a tissue when sneezing or when you cough. Throw away the tissue immediately after using it and wash your hands.

  • Stay home if you aren’t feeling well. If you have any of the symptoms mentioned above – fever, cough, difficulty breathing call your doctor and make an appointment.

  • Avoid traveling to places or attending events where’s going to be a large crowd.

  • Self-isolate yourself at home if feeling unwell – have a fever (anything above 37.3 degrees Celsius), a runny nose or a headache.

 5.      How worried should you be about the coronavirus?

The illness provoked by COVID-19 is mild especially for children and young adults. 1 in 5 people with coronavirus need hospital care.

The problem, most of the times, concerns the ones you get in touch with, like older members of your family or friends with chronic diseases, that can need special, intensive care, and that cannot be available for them if there’s a large number of other high-risk patients waiting in line.

6.      Who are the ones at risk of developing sever illness?

We are talking about older persons and people with pre-existing medical conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, lung disease or cancer.

7.      Does antibiotics work against COVID-19?

No, antibiotics do not work against coronavirus. Antibiotics only work on bacterial infections and the coronavirus is, as the name says, a virus!

8.      Is there a cure/a vaccine?

No there’s no cure or vaccine yet, but scientists are trying to develop certain methods of treatment. The ones that are not in the high-risk demographic but are coronavirus positive, should receive care to relieve the symptoms.

9.      Does wearing a mask helps preventing catching coronavirus?

Wear the mask only if you are ill and experiencing the COVID-19 symptoms, or you are taking care of someone with coronavirus. If you want to protect yourself make sure you wash your hands often, cover your mouth and nose while coughing with your elbow or a tissue and keep a 1-meter distance from people coughing or sneezing.

Keep in mind that disposable masks are for a one-time use only!

10.  What’s the incubation period for COVID-19?

The incubation period is the time between catching the virus and experiencing symptoms. It ranges from 1 to 14 days and most commonly around 5 days.

11.  Can you get COVID-19 from your pet?

No, cats and dogs, or other companion animals cannot spread the disease.

12.  Can you receive a package from a COVID-19 infected area?

Yes, you can because the likelihood of a person infecting a commercial good is low.

Hope we’ve answered some of your questions regarding COVID-19, stay safe, avoid contact with other people if possible, keep a good hygiene and even if you are young and have a strong immune system, that will help you pass all this craziness, people around you may be in the high-risk demographic, so make sure you keep yourself and others safe!

The virus is still being studied by scientists, so news about it may still appear. Choose a reliable source of information and stick to it. We recommend to you the World Health Organization website ( www.who.int ) and the website of the Ministry of Health from the country you live in.
