A Porn Star's Secret Identity Revealed!

04.03.14

Privacy and anonymity are crucial for both provider and client in the sex industry, revealing one of the highest levels of trust a partnership could form. Sometimes, however, secrets are made public and one porn star’s identity made quite a stir at the beginning of this year.

Lauren is a freshman at Duke University, who started starring in pornos so she could afford her college tuition fees without burdening her family financially. The media decided to portray her decision as something drastic, but Lauren dismisses this fact by stating that her experience in porn “has been nothing but supportive, exciting, thrilling and empowering”.

Lauren was found out when her Twitter account was followed by a fellow student from Duke. The information spread easily on the university’s campus, quickly capturing media attention, and stripping her of her privacy. Lauren, however, decided not to hide from the publicity (an impossible task in today’s day and age), but rather to use it in her favour to support other sex workers.

The Duke University freshman makes it clear that her decision to work in porn belongs within a feminist discourse. Everything she did was consensual and perfectly legal. Although she admits that not all women have the same positive experiences in this industry, Lauren still thinks that it is time to treat this path as a legitimate career. Only then, she states, will rules and regulations be imposed.

When asked what she will do in the future when trying to get a job, Lauren says that she “wouldn’t want to work for someone who discriminates against sex workers” anyway. Even now, although her porn star identity is completely public, Lauren wants to continue working in this industry.

“For me, shooting pornography brings me unimaginable joy. When I finish a scene, I know that I have done so and completed an honest day’s work. It is my artistic outlet: my love, my happiness, my home”, she says. Many escorts believe the same about their chosen paths. Abuse exists in any kind of industry, but should not dismiss the legitimacy of the business.
