After previously talking about the Life of a Courtesan, we thought we’d do a complete turn around the world andmove from the courts of France to Nippon.  

In Japan, escorting has been raised to the standard of fine art with the geisha. Thanks to all the movie appearances in the last two decades, you’ve certainly heard by them by now. Most of the geishas skills consisted in interpreting music, dancing, serving tea in the classic Japanese style, talking and debating interesting subjects. This, however, has more to do with Japan’s polygamist culture than it has to do with the sex industry.

It was not uncommon for geishas to adopt a single patron, for whom they became mistresses and bore their children. Almost always, the client’s family was completely aware of this. With Japan’s marriages being formed after the two extended families negotiated the relationship openly, lack of love was a common occurrence. This is why polygamy became so fruitful and widely tolerated in Japan.

Over the years, the geisha has gone through numerous changes as far as their role goes. Now, learning to become a geisha has become an expensive endeavour, and fully sponsoring a geisha an almost impossible task. Certain men still sponsor a geisha, but more often than not, this turns into a fully-fledged romantic relationship and leaves the escorting world.  

Overall, most of today’s escorts are very similar to the geisha. Apart from offering sexual services, they offer companionship in the form of exciting dates and interesting conversation.
